Baal Perazim: God is Your Breakthrough

Paul Tothill spoke about breakthrough at Dan Duval's conference held at Field of Dreams Church in Adelaide on 1 March 2019. Read his sermon notes.

This is a prophetic and revelatory conference. Daniel has given us some practical supernatural realities with respect to releasing “judges” into geographical contexts. This no doubt draws on the function we carry as Kings and Priests and that some graces have been given to certain people to function in certain ways for the benefit of others and regions.

I want to add to what you have already heard by adding another important facet to the teaching.

The title of Baal Perazim relates to a geographical place mentioned in the Old Testament where King David won a famous victory. The words Baal Perazim mean the Lord of the breakthrough.

A battle ensued not long after David was anointed as King of Israel. Historically, the Philistines had rejected David and he had suffered great loss at Zitlag. His mighty men, those who started with David lost and bewildered at Addulum’s cave, turned on David and wanted to stone him. David had to strengthen himself in the LORD. He was not long after anointed as King. Sometimes our worse moments in our development are the greatest places of promotion and break through.

2 SAMUEL 5:17

"When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.

(Rephaim mean giants).

And David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to David, “Go up for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” And David came to Baal-perazim and David defeated them there. And he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking flood.” Therefore, the name of this place is called Baal perazim.”

We see immediately the power of the present word of God into our context. We note also that David waited to inquire of the Lord as the prophetic and revelatory strategies to defeat the enemy.

When we know how to inquire into the present word of the Lord and move from the revelatory realm into the natural realm in obedience to that word, all of heaven backs us in.

King David is a shadow and type of Jesus. He is an imperfect representation of the heart that Jesus carried. He gives us so many revelatory keys in the Psalms that Jesus himself establishes and shows to us to live as those whom possess the continuing potential of break-through.

When we see who we are in Christ and what the Gospel is really about in restoring us to intimate relationship with God we will see that relationship with God is the foundation to our breakthrough.

When I read Dr Michael Heiser, I was shocked to read that God has a royal family in heaven and a royal family on earth. Psalm 82 becomes the key to understanding the reason why we have been seated with Christ in heavenly places. Many of us have not been aware of the metanarrative of Scripture in a way that helps us understand why it is so important to always move in the way Jesus modelled to us- from heaven to earth. Jesus was the unique son of God, and in that sense is described as the only begotten son. But we will soon see that there are sons of God in heaven and sons of God on earth. In heaven they are called elohim- celestial beings, and on earth they humanity, human beings made in the image and likeness of God himself.

God has taken His place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgement: How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah. Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

I said, “You are gods, Elohim, sons of the Most High, all of you; nevertheless, like men you shall die, and fall like any prince.”

Arise, O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!

Now this is very clearly a divine assembly. It is God’s divine council that is made up of Elohim, sons of God who are divine celestial beings. This is God’s divine royal family. Now it is this council that we will ultimately rule over, subject to how we steward our ability to rule and serve God on earth, in the age to come. This council functioned as a genuine council does. Discussions would take place and decrees and verdicts given. When the Psalmist is speaking of the Elohim he is not speaking about us as sons of God. This is supported by peer reviewed scholarship as Heiser points out. We are adopted into God’s family to be God’s heavenly representatives on earth to govern the earthly region and establish God’s dominion- His rulership and His Kingdom culture and atmosphere.

Up to Genesis 11 there was no Hebrew. Only the nations, in fact 70 in all at that time. Elohim- the sons of God as gods were rulers under God in a Trinitarian Unity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Watchers formed part of the sons of God who had left their estate in heaven and engaged in intercourse with women and produced a hybrid called giants- Nephilim. The Watchers had made a pact at Mount Hermon. The base of Mount Hermon became a place of demonic worship to the lesser gods- the elohim (wh0 Paul the apostle later describes as principalities and powers) who God has appointed over the nations under His Kingship. After the flood the spirit of Nephilim became the spirits that moved under the gods to destroy humanity.

By the time we get to Genesis 11 there has been more than one rebellion in heaven and now a further one on earth. By building the Tower of Babel, a ziggaurat, God handed the nations over to the Elohim. He then takes for himself a new start to continue on with His plan to establish His Kingdom on earth. That means that Eden will cover the whole earth. That is where Abraham is called out of his father’s house.

Eden was a unique place in near eastern ancient thought. It was a place that was the first temple. A temple in ancient near eastern thought was a place a deity came to establish themselves. When the deity filled the temple, they brought all of their governmental realm with them. Eden would have been filled with Angels and celestial beings as the Holy Spirit was moving. Adam and Eve not only walked in the Presence of God, halak with the breeze of God, the Holy Spirit, they were to function from that realm into their commission. We call that entering into God’s rest. They lived in a place in God’s fullness, His rest, in perfect loving relationship with God, in His presence as God’s first vice regal rulers- His earthly royal kings. The priestly function predicated the kingly function.

Now fast forward through Israel’s failures to Jesus who is perfect Israel if you will. Israel was to reveal the ways and the name of the one true God to the nations around them who were worshipping the lesser gods, ie the divine sons of God, that Paul much later describes as the thrones, principalities and powers over nations. These are the gods or angels we get to judge and rule over in the age to come.

We cannot carry genuine Kingdom governmental authority apart from our relationship with Jesus. Jesus explains how to move in constant break through. Remember Jesus is a prototype and the true representation to us of an earthly royal son of God exercising God’s delegated authority and power to be a true prophet priest king- to carry rulership into life situations. Rulership is always measured with wisdom and mercy.

MATTHEW 11: 25

Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer: Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You’ve concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out to ordinary people, Yes, Father, that’s the way you like to work.

Jesus resumed talking to the people, but now tenderly. “The

Father has given me all these things to do and say. This is a unique Father-Son operation, coming out of Father and Son intimacies and knowledge. No one knows the Son the way the Father does, nor the Father the way the Son does. But I am not keeping it to myself; I am ready to go over it line by line with anyone willing to listen.

Jesus says intellectualism and more knowledge is not the answer to moving in more authority and power and getting your break through. He says it is found by being humble and teachable whilst in an intimate relationship with Him. More knowledge more principles is not an answer for greater intimacy. Greater intimacy leads to seeing, hearing, knowing and moving with the Spirit in the present revelations of God to cause your break through to manifest.

Jesus said in John 15 "apart from me", separated from me, you can do nothing of the Kingdom realm. In your own mind, in your own strength, in your own understanding we are not going to get the break-through we seek. We get it by remaining in Him, by learning how to live as one with Him. We want more "how", which is valuable only when you know the "why" and the "who". Everything is in Christ.

Jesus says clearly that the heavy teaching, the yoke of the religious elite and their teachers has been removed.

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me- watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of God’s grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.

This becomes the foundation to our reconciliation to God in Christ. Paul’s central teaching is learning how to live in Christ by walking in the Holy Spirit. In other words, recognise you are one with Jesus in the same way that a husband and wife are one flesh. This idea of being one is the foundation to Ephesians.

Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm has already been lavished upon us as a love gift from our wonderful heavenly father, the father of the Lord Jesus- all because He sees us wrapped in Christ. – One with Christ. ( Ephesians 1:3 Passion Translation)

Christ has wrapped us in himself. On earth, we have wrapped our self around Christ, and in heaven Jesus has wrapped himself around us. Now this is important. Because if we are wrapped in Jesus, Jesus is one with the Father in a Trinitarian sense. The name YHWH is in fact the name of the transcendent one, God, who is in his very function Father Son Holy Spirit. They sat together as the supreme ruler of the heavenly divine council. Jesus was the only begotten son meaning of a unique kind. Hebrews points this out.

And He chose us to be his very own, joining us to himself even before he laid the foundation of the universe! Because of his great love he ordained us so that we would be seen as holy- ones completely set apart for Him in relationship and purpose- in his eyes with an unstained innocence. For it was always in his perfect plan to adopt us as his delightful children, through our union with Jesus, the Anointed One, so that his tremendous love that cascades over us would glorify his grace- for the same love he has for his beloved One Jesus he has for us. (Ephesians 1:4-5)

Literally God fulfils the greatest commandment and the one just like it of which all the law and prophets hang- the second is love your neighbour as yourself. God loves us with the same love He loves himself. The value He places on us is the same value He places on Himself. Whilst the foundation of His throne, meaning His authority, is righteousness and justice these are expressions of His love. When God’s love is established in us we move in greater ability to carry higher realms of spiritual authority and supernatural power. I’ll come back to that very shortly.

This superabundant grace is already powerfully working in us releasing within us all forms of wisdom and practical understanding.

Through our union with Christ we too have been claimed by God as his own inheritance. Before we were even born, he gave us our destiny, that we would fulfil the plan of God who always accomplishes every purpose and plan in his heart. (Ephesians 1:11)

And now he is exalted as the first above every ruler, authority, government and realm of power of existence! He is gloriously enthroned over every name that is ever praised, not only in this age but in the age that is coming. (Ephesians 1:21)

Ephesians 2 And his fullness fills you…

He has raised us up with Christ the exalted One and we ascended with Him into the glorious perfection and authority of the heavenly realm for we are now co-seated as one with Christ! ( Ephesians 2:6)

Let’s go back to Psalm 82. If Jesus is over that council and you are in Him and co-seated with Him, you have been invited to hear what is happening in the proceedings. Jesus has given us the same audience He had with the Father and hearing and seeing what God was doing in the Divine Council. I believe the saying "He only did what He saw His heavenly father doing" means precisely that. He only spoke the present words- the legislation or edicts or judgments of heaven on earth. Because He was living as one with the Father, intimately surrendered to God’s love and empowered by that love in obedience even to death, he was able to destroy the Bulls of Bashan, the authority of the lesser gods going right back to Genesis 11.

When Jesus spoke about building His church as an ekklesia, He used a term known in that day as an assembly in which people gathered to make decisions for a people or region. The place that Jesus announced what He was building was at a place called Caeserea Philippi- the foot of Mount Hermon. This was the place that the Watchers came down, and the place that the gods were worshipped. Jesus was picking a fight that He was raising up a new breed of rulers, the royal earthly sons of God who would represent Him from heaven on earth and would establish His break throughs through their ability to rule on earth as it already is in heaven.

God is raising up those who have been called to be governmental gifts- judges who know how to engage in the audience of the divine council through their union with Christ in the Holy Spirit, in the same way Jesus did. It is through intimacy that the Holy Spirit starts revealing things to us, i.e. relationship always precedes function because that is God’s Genesis order.

When humanity was made on the sixth day, the seventh day they rested. They entered into relationship with God and literally “sat” with Him and walked with Him as sons suctioning as Priest Kings . Notice how Jesus would always sit to speak, like a King would. Notice His disciples both sat with Him and walked with Him and He showed them how He did things.

This is the foundation to every break through. This is the foundation to being a judge. We are not engaging the world as we see it. We are engaging the world from how God sees it. We are engaging the heavenly realms to gain wisdom and understanding but also the present decrees and judgments of heaven. We bring those things as the ordained word of God as part of His Kingly rule and establish them on earth. Somethings we need to declare some things we need to do just like Jesus.

All this is summed up in the promise of John 14 that brings us into the greater works that Jesus did.
